Donald Trump wasted no time after his inauguration, swiftly signing several executive orders that rolled back various policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Speaking to supporters during an inauguration parade event at a sports arena in Washington DC, the newly sworn-in 47th president announced his intention to repeal “80 destructive and radical executive actions of the previous administration.”

Among the first measures he enacted were:

January 6

Donald Trump granted pardons to approximately 1,500 of his supporters who were charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Additionally, he commuted the sentences of 14 members from the far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, including some who had been convicted of seditious conspiracy.

Climate Changes

Exiting the Paris Climate Agreement Again: Donald Trump has once again withdrawn the United States from the Paris climate agreement, risking the primary objective of the agreement to prevent global temperatures from rising by 1.5°C.

Trump originally pulled the U.S. from the agreement during his first term, a decision that was later reversed by President Biden.

Reversing Electric Vehicle Goals: Trump has revoked a 2021 executive order by President Biden that aimed for half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2030 to be electric, stepping back from efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption.

Energy Policies

Resuming Arctic Oil Drilling: Donald Trump has repealed a 2023 policy from President Biden that prohibited oil drilling across 16 million acres in the Arctic. Declaring a national energy emergency, Trump has pledged to refill the U.S. strategic oil reserves and boost global energy exports.

Promoting Fossil Fuels: Emphasizing the economic benefits, Trump referred to oil as “liquid gold,” asserting that it will be instrumental in restoring the nation’s wealth. He expressed his commitment to making the United States a major energy exporter again.

Immigration Policies

Addressing Illegal Immigration: Donald Trump declared illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border a national emergency. He plans to deploy US troops to assist immigration agents and tighten restrictions on refugees and asylum seekers.

Targeting Criminal Cartels: The president has classified criminal cartels as terrorist organizations, taking aggressive measures to combat their activities.

Changing Citizenship Rules: Trump has introduced policies to prevent children of immigrants who are in the US illegally from obtaining citizenship.

Reversing Biden’s Immigration Policies: Trump has overturned several of Joe Biden’s immigration directives, including those that limited deportations to individuals who commit serious crimes, pose national security threats, or were apprehended at the border.

Foreign Affairs Policies

Suspension of Foreign Aid: Donald Trump has temporarily halted all U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days. This pause is for reviews to check if the programs align with his policy objectives. The impact of this suspension on already appropriated funds by Congress remains uncertain.

Policy on Jewish Settlers: The president has removed sanctions against Jewish settlers previously penalized for committing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Reinstating Cuba on Terror List: Trump has reversed the Biden administration’s decision to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Free Speech Initiatives

Restoration of Free Speech: President Trump has pledged to restore and protect free speech, aiming to halt what he considers the censorship of free expression.

Investigation into Government Practices: He signed an executive order to stop the government from being used against political opponents. This order instructs the Attorney General to examine the federal government’s actions over the past four years, specifically targeting the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Federal Trade Commission.

Correcting Past Misconduct: The directive focuses on identifying and rectifying any inappropriate use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to target political adversaries, emphasizing a move towards correcting what the administration views as past abuses of power.

Death Penalty Reinstatement

Enforcing Capital Punishment: President Trump has issued a comprehensive directive concerning the death penalty, instructing the Attorney General to ensure that states are equipped with the necessary resources, specifically lethal injection drugs, to execute death sentences.

Criticism of Opposition: In his executive order, President Trump criticized those in judicial and political positions who are against the death penalty, accusing them of undermining and obstructing the laws of the United States.

Reversal of Moratorium: This action comes as a significant shift from the previous administration’s stance. A moratorium on federal executions had been instituted since 2021.

President Trump’s order effectively ends this, despite the reduced number of inmates on federal death row, which decreased to three after former President Joe Biden commuted the sentences of 37 death row inmates to life imprisonment.

TikTok Extension

Temporary Reprieve for TikTok: President Trump has issued an executive order granting TikTok, the popular social media platform, an additional 75 days to operate in the United States. This move provides a temporary relief for millions of American TikTok users.

Continued National Security Concerns: Despite the extension, unresolved issues regarding national security and the ownership of TikTok persist. The platform’s parent company, ByteDance, based in China, faces ongoing scrutiny.

Search for a U.S. Buyer Extended: Originally, ByteDance was required to secure a U.S. buyer by January 19 to avoid a ban. President Trump’s recent order extends this deadline, offering ByteDance more time to comply with U.S. regulations.

Personal Sentiment: In his remarks, President Trump expressed a personal fondness for TikTok, which influenced his decision to sign the executive order extending its operation.

Government Reforms and Federal Workforce Changes

Mandatory Office Return: President Trump has mandated that all federal employees return to office work five days a week, reversing the flexible work arrangements that were prevalent during previous administrations.

Federal Hiring Freeze: Concurrent with the return-to-office mandate, there is a new hiring freeze across federal agencies, with the exception of military personnel. This freeze is part of a broader effort to streamline government operations.

Creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE): A new advisory body, DOGE, has been established with the goal of reducing the size and increasing the efficiency of the federal government. This body will evaluate and recommend cuts or consolidations within federal agencies.

Accountability Measures: The order also includes provisions to hold former government officials accountable for any actions deemed as election interference, signaling a strong move towards enforcing legal and ethical standards within the government.

Addressing the Cost of Living Crisis

Government-wide Directive: President Trump has issued a directive to every department and agency within the federal government, mandating them to take active measures to address the ongoing cost of living crisis.

This directive aims to alleviate the financial burden on American families by looking into ways to reduce expenses and increase economic efficiency across all sectors of government.

Gender and Equality Policies

Elimination of DEI Programs: President Trump has ordered an end to what he describes as “wasteful” government programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Opposing Gender Ideology Extremism: The administration has announced measures to protect women from what it calls “gender ideology extremism,” focusing on maintaining traditional gender roles.

Federal Recognition of Sex: The executive order stipulates that the federal government will only recognize two sexes, effectively rolling back previous recognitions of gender diversity.

Drug Cartels

Terrorist Designation: President Trump has issued an executive order classifying certain cartels and related organizations as foreign terrorist organizations and specially designated global terrorists.

National Security Threat: The order highlights that “international cartels constitute a national-security threat beyond that posed by traditional organized crime,” signaling a shift towards more aggressive federal action against these groups.

World Health Organization (WHO) Withdrawal

Withdrawal Announcement: The United States, under the new directive from President Trump, is set to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Reasons for Withdrawal: Citing financial grievances, the order states that the WHO demands “unfairly onerous payments from the United States” which are “far out of proportion” compared to other countries. It highlights the discrepancy in contributions between the U.S. and China, noting that despite China’s larger population, it contributes significantly less to the WHO.
