2025 Oscar: Historic Wins for Zoe Saldaña and Paul Tazewell

Paul Tazewell etched his name in the annals of Oscar history during the star-studded 2025 Academy Awards, clinching the Best Costume Design accolade for his mesmerizing work on “Wicked.”
This milestone marked him as the first Black man to win in this category, joining Ruth E. Carter—who was the first Black person to achieve this honor in 2029 for her work on “Black Panther.”
From the illustrious stage of the Dolby Theatre, an elated Tazewell expressed his gratitude, highlighting his collaboration with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
“I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award… I’m so proud of this,” Tazewell proclaimed. He extended heartfelt thanks to the cast, director Jon M. Chu, and producer Marc Platt for their trust and support in his vision.
The ceremony also celebrated other groundbreaking moments. Zoe Saldaña captured her first Oscar for her portrayal in “Emilia Pérez,” becoming the first Dominican American to win an Academy Award.
An emotional Saldaña dedicated her triumph to her family and cast, acknowledging her roots and the dreams of her immigrant forebears.
The evening was filled with memorable performances and tributes, including acts by Doja Cat, RAYE, and a special homage to Quincy Jones performed by Queen Latifah. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the event was broadcast live from Ovation Hollywood, airing on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
