5 Reasons Elon Musk Says He “Regrets” His Trump Posts

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk says he now regrets some of the posts he fired off about President Donald Trump during their recent clash on social media.

“I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,” Elon Musk admitted on his platform, X, after a week that saw their feud spiral into the open.

The public spat began when Musk slammed Trump’s tax bill as a “disgusting abomination,” urging Americans to pressure lawmakers to block it, warning it could trigger a recession.

In a series of increasingly heated exchanges, Musk even suggested, without providing evidence, that Trump appears in unreleased government files related to Jeffrey Epstein—a claim the White House swiftly denied.

Trump, for his part, declared that his relationship with Musk was finished and accused the Tesla CEO of having “lost his mind.” He also threatened to cancel lucrative government contracts with Musk’s companies—deals estimated to be worth $38 billion, much of it with SpaceX.

1. The backlash was swift and serious

Late last week, Musk unleashed a flood of criticism on X about Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” even calling it a “disgusting abomination.” He went further, demanding Trump’s impeachment, joking Trump was hiding in Epstein’s files, and declaring himself responsible for Trump’s 2016 win.

But the response from Trump was equally harsh, calling Musk “crazy,” threatening to yank federal contracts worth $22 billion, and taunting that he’d “lost his mind”.

2. Tesla shares took a hit

Markets reacted instantly. Tesla stock dropped nearly 15%—its worst day since the pandemic. Pre-market trading even began rising after Musk’s apology, signaling that investors were relieved his hostility towards Trump had cooled.

3. Federal contracts were under threat

Musk’s behemoth businesses, SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI, rely heavily on government contracts. Trump’s threats to pull federal deals, including a potential $22 billion cut, posed real risks. Musk’s regret mirrors a concern to protect those key revenue streams.

4. He admitted publicly “he went too far”

On June 11, Musk posted a public mea culpa:

“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”

He also deleted the most explosive claims, like Trump’s link to Epstein and calls for impeachment, signalling a deliberate retreat.

5. A thaw and maybe a truce began

Trump softened his tone, saying he “wished Musk well” and that he’d have no problem if Musk reached out. Musk reciprocated with a simple heart emoji. All signs point to a strategic de-escalation and possibly a reset in their fragile relationship
