Angel Reese Calls Out Media for Ignoring Racism Against WNBA Players

The rivalry between WNBA rookies Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, which began during their college basketball days, seems to have led to an increase in racist behavior among WNBA fans since the two joined the league.

After a playoff win against the Indiana Fever, Connecticut Sun player Alyssa Thomas spoke out about racist remarks from Fever fans. According to USA Today, Thomas said she’s experienced more racism this year than in her entire 11-year career. “It’s not acceptable, and something needs to be done, whether it’s the team handling their fans or the league stepping in,” she said.

In response, the WNBA released a statement condemning racist and hateful comments. “The WNBA is home to some of the best athletes in the world. While we welcome a growing fan base, we will not tolerate racist, derogatory, or threatening comments directed at players, teams, or anyone involved with the league,” the statement read. The league also mentioned they are monitoring fan behavior and will involve law enforcement if needed.

Angel Reese, who has faced racism and threats before, criticized the media for allowing these issues to continue. She believes biased reporting has made the problem worse. Reese has been targeted by the media ever since the 2023 NCAA Women’s Championship Game, where she mimicked a gesture Caitlin Clark had used earlier in the tournament. While Clark was praised for her actions, Reese was labeled unsportsmanlike, showing a clear double standard.

Clark, who has been dragged into the controversy due to her fanbase, spoke out against the racist remarks as well. In a statement shared by The Athletic, she said, “No one in our league should have to deal with racism, hurtful comments, or threats.

Those people aren’t fans—they’re trolls, and it’s not fair to the players or the WNBA.”

Though the WNBA has condemned the behavior, the increase in racist incidents highlights the ongoing challenges the league faces. Reese, Thomas, and others have called for stronger action to protect players from these harmful attacks.
