Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott Responds with Wit to Racist Provocation on Social Media

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has once again found himself the target of racial harassment for simply fulfilling his duties. Despite the challenges, Scott has opted to address these incidents with humour and educational responses on social media.
The latest incident involved a troll sending Scott a doctored photo with a clown nose, aimed at demeaning him. The Root reports that the anonymous sender’s attempts to provoke the mayor escalated to explicit racism when they failed to elicit the desired response.
Scott maintained his composure, replying with a standard acknowledgement message, which only intensified the sender’s derogatory remarks, including a racist image featuring a banana.

In response, Scott chose to use this as a teachable moment about the persistence and absurdity of racism. He shared the exchange on his Instagram, adding a caption that reflects on the continuity of such bigotry, heightened by the current political climate which he suggests has given racists a renewed boldness.
Scott’s post emphasized resilience and awareness, stating, “The years may change, but the racism stays the same. These folks are emboldened by this current federal administration.
Although the internet is now the place they spew their vile hatred, their vocabulary clearly has not evolved much over the last 500 years. BTW, I eat two bananas a day to help keep my mind and body strong in the fight against racism, sexism, or any type of hatred.”
This isn’t the first time Scott has been subjected to such attacks. Following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, he faced criticism for his attire during a critical appearance.
Additionally, detractors derogatorily labeled him a “DEI mayor.” In an interview with former MSNBC host Joy Reid, Scott revealed that despite the insults, he has transformed these attacks into affirmations of his achievements and electoral mandate.
