Former President Barack Obama and top Democrat Nancy Pelosi have shown their support for President Joe Biden after he announced on July 21 that he will not run for re-election. Despite their support for Biden, neither Obama nor Pelosi endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, instead highlighting the party’s need to handle this new situation carefully.
Obama praised Biden’s work and character, saying, “Sixteen years ago, when I picked Joe as my vice president, I knew about his great career in public service. But what I admired more was his character—his deep empathy, resilience, decency, and belief that everyone counts.”
He continued, “Since becoming president, Biden has shown this character repeatedly. He helped end the pandemic, created millions of jobs, lowered the cost of prescription drugs, passed the first major gun safety law in 30 years, made the biggest investment to fight climate change in history, and fought for workers’ rights. Internationally, he restored America’s standing, revitalized NATO, and led the world in standing up to Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
Obama also thanked Biden and his wife, Jill, saying, “Michelle and I want to express our love and gratitude to Joe and Jill for leading us so well during these tough times and for their commitment to freedom and equality.”
In a subtle critique of former President Donald Trump, Obama added, “Biden pointed us away from the chaos, falsehoods, and division of Trump’s administration. Through his actions, Joe has reminded us of our best values—trust, honesty, kindness, hard work, democracy, rule of law, and accountability.”
Obama’s decision not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris suggests that the Democratic Party may be open to new candidates for the 2024 presidential race. His respected position within the party could greatly influence the nomination process.
Nancy Pelosi also shared her thoughts on Biden’s decision, writing on the X app, “President Joe Biden is a patriotic American who has always put our country first. His leadership makes him one of the most important Presidents in American history.
With love and gratitude to President Biden for believing in America’s promise and giving people the chance to reach their potential. God blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness.”
On July 21, Biden fully endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, saying he wants to focus on his current duties as president. “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to run for re-election and to focus all my energy on my duties as President for the rest of my term.
My best decision in 2020 was choosing Kamala Harris as my Vice President. Today, I fully support Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
