Beyoncé Files New Motion to Trademark Daughter Blue Ivy Carter’s Name

Beyoncé’s legal team is still working to trademark her daughter Blue Ivy Carter’s name, despite recent challenges. Billboard reports that her lawyers have filed a new request with the U.S.
Trademark Office after a previous ruling blocked the trademark, citing possible confusion with a small clothing boutique in Wisconsin that has used the name “Blue Ivy” since before Blue Ivy Carter was born.
Beyoncé’s team argues that no one would confuse her daughter, who is internationally known, with a small store in the Midwest. “No one would think the famous Carter family is partnering with a local Wisconsin shop to sell clothes,” her lawyers said.
“People wanted to make products based on our child’s name, and you don’t want anybody trying to benefit off your baby’s name,” Jay-Z told Vanity Fair in 2013. “It wasn’t for us to do anything; as you see, we haven’t done anything.”
The trademark for Blue Ivy Carter was first filed shortly after her birth in 2012 to protect her name from misuse. Jay-Z explained in 2013 that they wanted to stop others from making products with their child’s name. “It wasn’t for us to make money off her name,” he told Vanity Fair. “We haven’t done anything with it.”
Over a decade later, the trademark is still in dispute. Beyoncé’s team previously dealt with opposition from Veronica Morales, who owns an event planning company called “Blue Ivy.”
Although Morales’s objections were dismissed in 2020, a recent ruling by a trademark examiner pointed to potential confusion with the Wisconsin clothing store, which registered “Blue Ivy” in 2011.
Beyoncé’s lawyers argue that Blue Ivy Carter’s name is highly recognized, unlike the small Wisconsin store, and should be allowed as a trademark. “Since her birth, Blue Ivy Carter is known by the public, and any trademark with her name would be connected to her,” they said.
As the trademark battle continues, Blue Ivy Carter is also making her debut in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King as Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala, set to release on December 20.
