Beyoncé Postpones Jan. 14 Announcement Contributes $2.5M

After a prolonged legal battle, Beyoncé has succeeded in securing the trademark for her daughter Blue Ivy’s name. The 43-year-old singer triumphed over a small Wisconsin boutique that had held the trademark since September 2009, as confirmed by The Trademark Official Gazette on Tuesday.

The legal journey began in early 2012 shortly after the birth of Beyoncé’s first child when she and her husband, Jay-Z, initiated efforts to trademark “Blue Ivy” through their company, BGK Trademark Holdings LLC. Their goal was to prevent others from exploiting their daughter’s name commercially.

The process faced challenges, particularly from Veronica Morales, a wedding planner who had been operating under the name “Blue Ivy Events” since 2009.

Morales argued that the trademark would negatively affect her business, sparking a legal dispute that extended over several years.

Beyoncé contended that it was unlikely for consumers to confuse her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, with a boutique wedding planning service, labeling Morales’ claims as frivolous.

In 2020, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled in Beyoncé’s favor, finding that there was a clear distinction between the event company’s name and that of her daughter. The decision allowed Beyoncé to pursue further trademark protections.

The saga continued into 2023 when a Wisconsin boutique, which had been using a “Blue Ivy” logo since 2011, opposed Beyoncé’s trademark efforts. The boutique argued that the logo and the name were “confusingly similar.”

However, when the boutique did not formally challenge the claim, Beyoncé’s legal team was able to move forward and ultimately resolved the matter.

The Trademark Official Gazette has now made it public that if no opposition is filed within 30 days from December 31, Beyoncé’s trademark request will be officially granted, as stated in their latest notice.
