Big Sean Thanks Tyler Perry for Telling His Grandmother's WWII Story in 'The Six Triple Eight'

Detroit rapper Big Sean recently expressed his appreciation for filmmaker Tyler Perry’s portrayal of a profoundly personal story in the new film “The Six Triple Eight.”

The movie, which premiered on the red carpet in Los Angeles on December 3, brings to light the heroic tales of World War II’s only all-Black, all-female battalion, the 6888th, to which Big Sean’s grandmother belonged.

At the premiere, Big Sean highlighted the significance of the film in capturing an important yet often overlooked chapter of American and Black history.

“The Six Triple Eight Battalion connected millions with over 17 million pieces of undelivered mail, serving as a crucial line of communication during the war,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They were fighting their own war, being strong Black women during segregation and fighting for their country.”

Big Sean praised not only his grandmother but all members of the battalion for their strength and resilience. “I’m just proud of them, not just my grandmother, proud of all of them. I’m happy to be raised by such strong Black women that are embedded in my DNA, and I’m forever grateful for it. It’s a super emotional night,” he added.

The Netflix film, set to debut on December 20, stars Kerry Washington as Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion.

In addition to his film involvement, Big Sean was also seen in Las Vegas announcing a new merchandise collaboration with Chips Ahoy! at ComplexCon.

The collection, co-designed by Big Sean, features items inspired by the brand’s Big Chewy Cookie, including a T-shirt, a heavyweight sweatshirt in chocolate brown, and an oversized tote bag designed to carry the cookie or its new nostalgic lunchbox tin.
