Black Panther Actress and Filmmaker Connie Chiume Dies at 72

Connie Chiume, the acclaimed South African actress and filmmaker best known for her roles in Black Panther and Black Is King, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, at the age of 72. Chiume died in Johannesburg following a “period of illness,” her family announced in a statement shared on Instagram.

“The Chiume family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all the messages of support and condolences during this difficult time as they cope with the loss of their mother, Connie,” the statement read.

“Her children would like to express their deep appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff who provided exceptional care during her stay. Details of the memorial and funeral services will be shared on Connie’s social media platforms in due course, as the family takes time to make the necessary arrangements.”

Chiume’s career spanned decades, with her early work including roles in popular South African television shows such as Rhythm City and Zone 14. Before transitioning into acting, she initially worked as a teacher.

In 2018, Chiume made her mark on the global stage by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a tribal leader in the blockbuster film Black Panther. She reprised her role in the 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Chiume also appeared in Beyoncé’s visual album Black Is King and the South African drama series Gomora.

Throughout her illustrious career, Chiume earned multiple South African Film and Television Awards and was honored with the Living Legend Award at the inaugural Cultural and Creative Industry Awards in March.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry, including from fellow Black Panther star Winston Duke. “Rest in peace my beautiful sister Connie Chiume,” Duke tweeted. “Thank you for the resilience and always inspired, present work you delivered in your long illustrious career. You always possessed gratitude and a generous, bold heart. We’ll miss you and are grateful for your time here. Safe travels on your continued journey.”
