Several Black politicians are standing by President Joe Biden after he promised to stay in the race for the 2024 presidential election. Biden released a two-page letter to congressional Democrats, saying he is committed to running despite public calls for him to step down.

“I wouldn’t be running again if I didn’t believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024,” Biden wrote.

Biden explained how he was elected, noting that he received over 14 million votes and 87% of the votes in the Democratic nomination process. With nearly 3,900 delegates, he is the clear nominee of the party. In a tweet, Biden urged Democrats to unite and move forward to defeat Trump.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) released a statement criticizing colleagues who want Biden to drop out. “Any ‘leader’ calling for Biden to drop out needs to get their priorities straight and stop undermining this incredible leader who has delivered real results for our country,” Wilson wrote. She stressed the danger of Trump and the importance of Biden and Kamala Harris in protecting democracy.

Wilson has been active on social media, warning about the potential consequences if Trump is re-elected. She highlighted Trump’s plan to be a dictator, his role in the January 6th insurrection, and the actions of MAGA Republicans who want to ban abortion and make it harder to vote.

Vice President Kamala Harris, speaking at the 2024 Essence Festival in New Orleans, emphasized the importance of the upcoming election without directly addressing Biden’s debate performance. “This is probably the most significant election of our lifetime,” Harris said, urging voters to decide the future of the country.

Support for the president also came from Reps. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.) and Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio). Horsford, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, said that voters in Nevada care about a fair economy and protecting their rights, and they see Biden and Harris as their advocates.

“They know President Biden and Vice President Harris are fighting for them,” Horsford stated, expressing confidence in their ability to prevent Trump from returning to the White House. As the Democratic Party faces challenges, the support from key Black politicians highlights the need for unity to win the 2024 election.
