Burna Boy Makes History as First African Artist to Surpass Two Billion Streams in the UK

Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has made history by becoming the first African artist to surpass two billion streams in the United Kingdom. This achievement was recognized with a Brit plaque, presented to him during his sold-out show at Koko Camden in London on Monday night.

This latest accolade comes just weeks after Burna Boy received a Brit plaque for reaching one billion streams during another sold-out performance at the London Stadium last month. Accepting the Brit 2 billion streams plaque, Burna Boy expressed his gratitude and determination.

“Thank you very much. I appreciate you. Then, now that’s it. You’ve to fight for your right,” he said. When one of the presenters suggested he already had it and didn’t need to fight, Burna Boy responded, “No. You know, we have to fight for our rights.”

Burna Boy’s success extends beyond streaming milestones. His sixth studio album, “Love, Damini,” holds the record for the highest-peaking African album on the UK chart, topping it in July 2022. Additionally, with Saturday’s sold-out show, Burna Boy became the first African artist to solo-headline a UK stadium twice.

This historic milestone solidifies Burna Boy’s status as one of Africa’s most prominent global music icons. Nigerians have celebrated his achievement with pride, highlighting his international recognition and outstanding performances.

During his ‘I Told Them’ world tour, Burna Boy delivered an electrifying performance, featuring hits like “I Told Them,” “Gbona,” “Dey Play,” “Location,” “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” “Big 7,” “Talibans Remix,” “Giza,” “City Boys,” “It’s Plenty,” and “Last Last.” He also brought several Nigerian colleagues on stage, including Omah Lay, Phyno, Shallipopi, Odumodu Blvck, and Seyi Vibez.

Burna Boy’s show last year featured guest appearances from renowned artists such as Stormzy, Dave, J Hus, and Popcaan, further highlighting his significant influence and connections in the global music industry.
