Captain Beth Powell Honors Aviation Pioneer Bessie Coleman with New Book and Documentary

Captain Beth Powell is celebrating the legacy of Bessie Coleman, the first African-American and Native American woman to earn an international pilot’s license. Powell, a trailblazing pilot herself, has partnered with Coleman’s family to release a book and documentary about her inspiring journey.

In honour of Coleman’s birthday, Powell and Coleman’s granddaughter, Gigi Coleman, have introduced a documentary trailer for Discovering Bessie Coleman and a biography titled Queen of the Skies. Powell, who made history in 2022 as the captain of an all-Black female flight crew, hopes to share Coleman’s story with a new generation.

The book, co-written by Powell and Gigi Coleman, tells the story of Coleman’s determination to become a pilot despite facing racism and gender discrimination. After being denied entry into flight schools in the U.S., Coleman learned French and trained in France in 1921.

“Beth is passionate about sharing Bessie’s journey, and I’m proud to help bring her story to life,” said Gigi Coleman.

The documentary will feature interviews with Coleman’s family, aviation experts, and well-known figures like actress and author Karyn Parsons. It will also highlight Coleman’s fight for equality, including her refusal to perform at segregated events.

“I want people to see themselves in Bessie’s story,” Powell said. “She proved that no dream is too big, and I’m honored to share her incredible journey.”

Coleman, also known as “Brave Bessie,” became famous for her daring flying tricks and dedication to inspiring Black women to pursue aviation. In 2023, the U.S. Mint honoured her with a special quarter as part of the American Women Quarters Program.
