‘Choose Common Sense Over Nonsense,’ Oprah Winfrey Urges American Voters

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, urging voters to choose “common sense over nonsense” in the upcoming election. Her message, delivered to a cheering crowd, focused on truth, honor, and joy as key values that represent the best of America.

Winfrey, who has stayed out of politics in recent years, brought her star power to support Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Her speech came just before Walz took the stage to accept the party’s nomination for vice president.

During her address, Oprah Winfrey emphasized the need for unity, while also indirectly criticizing the Republican challengers, former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.

“Despite what some may say, we aren’t so different from our neighbors,” she said. “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowner’s race, religion, or who they voted for. We just try to help.”

In a playful dig at Vance, she added, “And if the house belongs to a childless cat lady, we try to save the cat, too.” This comment referred to a 2021 interview where Vance called Democratic politicians “a bunch of childless cat ladies.” The remark was widely criticized after Vance became Trump’s running mate. Winfrey herself has no children.

Although Winfrey had previously supported Barack Obama in his 2007 presidential run, she has generally avoided politics in recent years. On Wednesday night, she identified herself as an independent voter and encouraged others to vote for Democrats in November.

“I’m a registered Independent, proud to vote again and again because that’s what Americans do,” Winfrey said, drawing loud applause.

Mississippi natives Tracy Prince and Kathy Sykes were thrilled to see Winfrey, who was born in their home state. “We love Oprah so much. Everyone in Mississippi is proud that she claims us,” Sykes said. She described Winfrey’s speech as a powerful message for independent voters, urging them to choose “common sense over nonsense.”

The evening also featured appearances from other celebrities, including Stevie Wonder, Mindy Kaling, and Kenan Thompson. The Democratic Party is relying on its famous supporters to attract attention and encourage voters to support Harris in the upcoming election.

This contrasts with last month’s Republican National Convention, which included appearances from musician Kid Rock and wrestler Hulk Hogan.
