Chris Rock Calls Will Smith’s Oscars Slap Reference in ‘Bad Boys 4’ a ‘Cheap Stunt’

In Bad Boys 4, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence seem to reference Smith’s infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars, a moment that hasn’t sat well with Chris Rock.

Near the end of the new action movie, Lawrence’s character Marcus slaps Smith’s character Mike repeatedly to snap him out of a daze after a serious fight. Many, including TMZ, saw this as Smith’s way of addressing the Oscars slap in his first major movie since the incident.

However, sources say this scene has reopened old wounds for Rock, who was the one slapped by Smith in real life.

“Chris thinks it’s a cheap stunt and finds it unimpressive,” a source told In Touch. “Will is making light of a serious situation and playing the victim. It was a low point in his career, but that’s no excuse.”

Rock has been keeping a low profile since the slap, and he’s frustrated that people keep bringing it up. “It annoys him that this incident keeps being mentioned. He suffered as much as Will did, and now Will has turned it into a joke in his movie,” the insider added.

“To Chris, this shows that Will’s actions were wrong. If Chris gets a chance to get back at Will, he’ll take it.”

Smith, 55, received a 10-year ban from attending the Academy Awards after he slapped Rock, 59, during the 2022 ceremony. This happened after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head, which is due to alopecia.

“Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it,” Rock joked, which led to Smith walking on stage and slapping him. After returning to his seat, Smith shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth.”

This shocking moment occurred just minutes before Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard, his first Academy Award.

Four months later, Smith apologized to Rock in a YouTube video, saying, “Chris, I apologize to you. My behaviour was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Rock responded in his 2023 comedy special, Selective Outrage, aiming at Smith and Jada. He said Smith’s anger should have been directed at Jada over her “entanglements,” not at him.

“His wife was sleeping with their son’s friend… she hurt him way more than he hurt me,” Rock said. “Everybody called that man weak. They called his wife a predator… And who did he hit? Me! A guy he knows he can beat up.”
