A court has decided to keep a $5 million judgment against President-elect Donald Trump in a case involving E. Jean Carroll. She accused him of sexual abuse and defamation. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit rejected Trump’s request for a new trial on December 30.

According to The New York Times, Trump’s lawyers argued that the trial in Manhattan was not fair. They said it was wrong to let two other women testify that Trump had assaulted them too. They also didn’t want the jury to hear a recording from “Access Hollywood” where Trump spoke inappropriately about women.

However, the appeals court disagreed and stated that Trump’s lawyers did not prove any mistakes were made in the trial. The decision mentioned, “Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings.”

The court’s decision also noted that the similar actions described by the other women supported Carroll’s claims. The judges, all appointed by Democratic presidents, found the evidence showed a pattern in Trump’s behavior.

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, was pleased with the decision. She said, “Both E. Jean Carroll and I are gratified by today’s decision. We thank the Second Circuit for its careful consideration of the arguments.”

Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, criticized the decision, suggesting it was politically motivated. He said, “The American People have re-elected President Trump, and they demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system,” indicating that they would continue to appeal the decision.

This ruling comes after another court in New York decided Trump should pay Carroll over $83 million for repeatedly calling her a liar.

Carroll spoke about the importance of the verdict, saying it was a win for all women who are often not believed when they say they have been assaulted. “Today, the world finally knows the truth,” she said. “This victory is not just for me but for every woman who has suffered because she was not believed.”
