DC Councilmember Trayon White Arrested for Allegedly Accepting $156,000 in Bribes

On August 18, Washington, D.C., Councilmember Trayon White Sr. was arrested on federal bribery charges. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, White allegedly accepted $156,000 in cash in exchange for influencing government employees to extend specific contracts.

The contracts in question were valued at $5.6 million, and the payments represented a three percent cut of the contract value. The payments were made by a confidential source on four separate occasions, and White’s interactions with the source were reportedly captured on video.

Matthew M. Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, stated that the charges were brought quickly due to the urgency of the situation. “Because the investigation involved contracts that could soon be awarded and other potential official acts, our Office acted swiftly to address the alleged crimes.”

During his initial court appearance on August 19, White remained mostly silent and did not enter a plea. He appeared in casual attire, wearing a grey sweatshirt, black pants, and grey sneakers. If convicted, White faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

As part of his release conditions, White must surrender his passport and any firearms, and he must notify pretrial services if he plans to travel outside of the D.C. area. He is also required to obtain court permission for any international travel and is prohibited from speaking with witnesses in the case—an order that could complicate his work as a council member.

White has represented Washington D.C.’s Ward 8 since 2017 and recently won the Democratic primary in June. His next court appearance is scheduled for a status hearing on September 19.

The investigation into White’s alleged involvement in the bribery scheme is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the FBI Washington Field Office, the D.C. Office of the Inspector General, and the IRS Criminal Investigation Washington Field Office.
