Denzel Washington Inspires HBCU Students During Virtual Roundtable Discussion

On November 19, Denzel Washington took part in a virtual roundtable discussion with eight students from seven historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), offering invaluable advice to the next generation of leaders.

The event, shared by DJ Jae Murphy on Instagram, showcased the actor’s commitment to empowering young minds.

“This was a timeless & legendary moment to curate an HBCU roundtable discussion with eight current students and, of course, our hero, Mr. Denzel Washington,” Murphy wrote.

“Thank you for pouring your knowledge and wisdom into our next generation of future leaders! It’s always a blessing to receive guidance from experience as the torch is being passed.”

During the discussion, the students expressed admiration for Washington’s legendary career, highlighting his influence as an actor and a role model.

In return, Washington encouraged the students to excel in their chosen paths and to carry forward the lessons of discipline and perseverance.

“There’s no question about it — I have been blessed,” Washington said. “There’s no question about you being the future. So, my prayer for you is that you take the baton in whatever your given field is and that you run with it.

That you excel, which I know you are doing; that you would excel and do your best.”

Balancing Stardom

While promoting his latest film, Gladiator II, Washington has stepped out of his typically private persona to share personal insights in public forums.

In recent interviews, the Training Day star has opened up about his struggles with substance abuse, showing a vulnerable side of his storied career.

In a candid conversation with Esquire, Washington revealed how his once-innocent enjoyment of wine escalated into a habit of consuming two bottles a day.

“I had this ideal idea of wine tastings and all that — which is what it was at first. And that’s a very subtle thing,” he said, acknowledging the toll it took on his life.

Despite the challenges, Washington maintained discipline in his professional life. According to Black Enterprise, the actor refrained from drinking while filming, although he admitted to resuming the habit once productions wrapped.

With over 65 acting credits to his name, Denzel Washington continues to inspire through both his work and his words. The virtual roundtable and his recent openness about personal struggles further cement his legacy as a cultural icon who strives to uplift others while reflecting on his own journey.

For the students who attended the discussion, the opportunity to learn from Washington firsthand was more than just a meeting—it was a passing of the torch from one generation to the next.
