Dr. Dre Launches a New School in Los Angeles

Dr. Dre, a well-known figure in hip-hop and business, is opening his second school in Los Angeles, following another one he started last year. He made this announcement at Morningside High School on August 12, alongside his longtime business partner, music executive Jimmy Iovine.
The new school, called the Iovine and Young Center Academy, will be part of the Inglewood Unified School District and is set to open in August 2025. Initially, it will only have ninth-grade students, but by the 2028-29 school year, it will be open to all high school grades.
This school aims to prepare students to be leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs by focusing on creative skills and making a positive impact on society. In their final year, students will work on big projects that tackle real-world issues.
The school district is excited about this new academy, saying it will provide exciting and new ways for high school students to learn.
This is the second school that Dr. Dre and Iovine have started. Their first school is in the Leimert Park neighborhood and is located at Audubon Middle School, which was chosen because fewer students were enrolling there in 2021.
The new school in Inglewood is a response to similar challenges—schools closing and fewer students enrolling over the past ten years. It will be on the campus of Crozier Middle School, which will close in June 2025.
Jimmy Iovine mentioned the importance of giving back to the community. “We wanted to start in the inner city because, especially for me, I owe a lot to the inner city of Los Angeles, and we intend to pay it back,” he said.
He believes this school will help students stand out when they apply for jobs or college because they will have learned to work with others across different subjects and to think innovatively.
Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are committed to improving education in areas where schools are struggling, using their resources and influence to make a difference.
