Eminem's New Album "The Death of Slim Shady" Gets Mixed Reviews

Eminem’s new album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce),” is out now, and critics have mixed feelings about it. This is the US rapper’s 12th album, and it marks the end of his alter ego, Slim Shady. The album cover shows Shady in a body bag, and in the music video for the song “Tobey,” Eminem uses a chainsaw on him.

Clash magazine called the album “a mixed bag.” Reviewer Robin Murray said it’s a mix of pleasing fans but also disappointing them. He noted that while it has some of Eminem’s best rapping in years, the writing feels dull.

Eminem told fans this is a “concept album,” meaning the songs should be listened to in order. The album has 19 tracks, including previously released songs “Tobey” and “Houdini,” and a follow-up to his 1999 hit “Guilty Conscience” with Dr. Dre. Billboard liked this sequel, calling it “a worthy second coming,” even though it doesn’t beat the original.

Michael Saponara from Billboard pointed out a part where Slim Shady blames Eminem for creating him to stir up trouble. USA Today praised Eminem’s skillful lyrics, especially when he raps about his daughter Hailie Jade in the song “Temporary.”

This song starts with old recordings of Eminem talking to his daughter as a child. Reviewer Melissa Ruggieri found this song the most memorable because it shows a more vulnerable side of Eminem.

In the song “Fuel,” Eminem mentions sexual assault allegations against fellow rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs with controversial lyrics. Pitchfork noted that Eminem talks about his past issues while also creating new ones.

The song “Antichrist” tries to be as offensive as possible, touching on topics like pronouns, woke society, and a video of Diddy attacking his then-girlfriend Cassie in 2016. Diddy has apologized for the video but denies all sexual assault claims.

The Independent gave the album a low rating of two stars, saying it feels joyless and uninspired. Reviewer Stevie Chick compared it to a newspaper opinion piece, noting its attempts to provoke reactions with comments on “the PC police” and “Gen Z.”

Overall, “The Death of Slim Shady” has divided critics. Some praise Eminem’s rapping and emotional depth, while others criticize its controversial content and lack of creativity.
