Fani Willis's Office Evacuated Due to Suspicious Powder Scare

The Fulton County District Attorney’s office, led by DA Fani Willis, was evacuated on March 21 after a suspicious package containing white powder was delivered, prompting a swift emergency response. The incident unfolded on the third floor of the Fulton County courthouse, leading to the temporary evacuation of the premises.

Firefighters and a hazardous materials team were immediately called to the scene. Upon examination, the substance was identified as a harmless starch or salt, and the courthouse was subsequently declared safe for reentry later that day.

Despite the non-hazardous nature of the powder, the Atlanta Fire Department reported that four individuals were transported to the hospital with complaints of headaches.

Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Ronald Slatton noted that the recipient of the suspicious package remains unidentified, and questions regarding the motive behind the incident are being directed to law enforcement officials.

However, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office indicated that they would not be pursuing an investigation into the matter, and no other law enforcement agencies, including the Atlanta Police Department, have announced plans to investigate.

Following the resolution of the situation, a spokesperson for Fani Willis’ office expressed gratitude for the rapid response by local agencies, which ensured the safety of courthouse staff and the public.

“The District Attorney and her staff greatly appreciate the quick and effective response by Atlanta and Fulton County agencies to the scene to protect our colleagues and the public,” stated the spokesperson to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

DA Fani Willis has gained national attention for spearheading significant racketeering cases, including the high-profile indictment against former President Donald Trump and 18 others over alleged interference in Georgia’s 2020 election.

Although this case saw four guilty pleas, it encountered setbacks, including Willis being removed due to a conflict of interest with a prosecutor she appointed. The case has since stalled, with Willis being ordered to pay attorney fees for one defendant.

Additionally, Willis successfully prosecuted a lengthy RICO case against rapper Young Thug and his alleged YSL gang affiliates, marking the longest-running trial in Georgia history. Willis was re-elected as District Attorney in November, continuing her tenure in a highly scrutinized and public-facing role.
