Recently, rapper J-Kwon’s chance to win a Grammy for the song “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” was taken away. This happened because The Recording Academy, which gives out the Grammys, changed its rules about using parts of other songs in new music.
J-Kwon helped write the original song “Tipsy,” which the country singer Shaboozey used in his new song.
According to Billboard, the new rules, set on December 12, say that writers of the original songs used in new music will only get a certificate, not a Grammys trophy, if the new song wins.
These changes are part of the Academy’s regular updates to make sure credits are accurate and include corrections or additions to the nominations list.
Shaboozey’s song has lines like “One, here comes the two to the three to the four” and “everybody at the bar gettin’ tipsy” from J-Kwon’s “Tipsy.” The two performed together at the BET Awards in June, showing they worked together on this new version.s
While Shaboozey could win a Grammy for his song, J-Kwon will only get a certificate. However, J-Kwon said earlier this year that he was happy with the money he made from the country version of his song, which did well on the music charts.
“I got a crazy percentage… Let’s say it like this: we did that together, and I’m proud of him,” he said in April when the song entered the Hot 100 at No. 36.
