Halle Berry Says She Took the Blame for 'Catwoman' Film Alone

In honor of Catwoman‘s 20th anniversary, Halle Berry talked to Entertainment Weekly about the movie’s poor reviews. Despite earning only $82 million worldwide and winning several “Worst” awards, Berry has felt the blame.

“I felt like it was my failure, but I didn’t make the movie alone,” she said. “All these years, I’ve carried it. I didn’t like the backlash. Being a Black woman, I’m used to dealing with negativity and fighting alone. I’m used to proving stereotypes wrong and finding a way.”

Berry explained that the criticism didn’t stop her. “A little bad publicity about a movie? I didn’t like it, but it wasn’t going to stop me from doing what I love. I hated that all the blame was put on me, and I hate that it’s still seen as my failure.”

Looking back, she added, “I can handle it. I still have a career 20 years later. It’s just part of my story. That’s okay. I’ve dealt with other failures and successes. People have opinions, and sometimes they’re louder than others. You just have to keep going.”

Catwoman came out on July 23, 2003. Directed by Pitof, the film starred Berry as Patience Phillips, a cosmetics company worker who becomes Catwoman. Berry admitted she was not excited about the script, which had Catwoman stopping a dangerous face cream. “I always thought the idea of Catwoman saving women from a face cream felt weak,” she said. “All the other superheroes save the world; they don’t just save women from cracked faces.”

Berry and producer Denise Di Novi said that criticism started when Berry’s costume was leaked online. Many fans thought it was too different from the original. Di Novi explained, “It was an early photo before we finished it. Halle was known for wearing a bikini in her Bond movie, so we thought, why not?”

Berry defended the costume choice, saying, “Fans were upset about the suit. It was different, but we wanted to take risks and do something new. The suit was better for my version of Catwoman, my body, and who I was.”
