Janet Jackson Repeats Right-Wing Rumor, Wrongly Says Kamala Harris Isn’t Black

Janet Jackson recently caused a stir by sharing conspiracy theories about Vice President Kamala Harris’ race in an interview with The Guardian on September 20. Jackson mentioned that she had heard claims suggesting Harris is not Black, saying, “Well, you know what they supposedly said? She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”
Even after the interviewer corrected this misinformation, Jackson repeated the claim, adding, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
These rumors seem to come from right-wing groups, as similar claims were spread by former President Donald Trump during the 2020 election. Trump questioned Harris’ identity, claiming she had only recently started identifying as Black.
During a presidential debate on September 10, he said, “I read where she was not Black. And then I read that she was Black, and that’s okay. Either one was okay with me. That’s up to her.”
Jackson’s comments surprised many, as she has previously spoken out on social issues like Black Lives Matter. Her remarks now leave people questioning her political views.
When asked if she believes America is ready for a Kamala Harris presidency, Janet Jackson said, “I don’t know.” She added, “Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”
Although the interview also touched on her upcoming shows and personal life, it’s her surprising comments on U.S. politics that have caught the most attention, leaving many of her fans confused.
