Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas defended her controversial comment about Governor Greg Abbott, saying her criticism was aimed at his policies, not his disability. During a Human Rights Campaign dinner in Los Angeles, Crockett called Abbott “Governor Hot Wheels” and added that “the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot (expletive) mess, honey.”
On social media, Crockett clarified her remarks: “I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.”
Abbott, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since a tree fell on him at age 26, is a staunch Trump supporter known for his controversial migrant transport program. Between 2022 and 2024, Texas spent over $148 million on busing migrants to predominantly Democratic cities.
Republican critics pounced on Crockett’s language. Texas Rep. Randy Weber has signaled plans to introduce a resolution to censure her, calling her remarks “vile” and “discriminatory.”
Crockett fired back on X, expressing frustration that those who support Trump—accused of mocking disabilities in the past—are now outraged by her comments. “Keep that same energy for all people, not just your political adversaries,” she wrote.
Representing Texas’s 30th Congressional District, Crockett is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, having previously drawn national attention for her outspoken criticism of hardline Trump supporters.
