Kamala Harris and Donald Trump Step Up Attacks as Election Day Nears

With just 16 days to go before the election, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are increasing their personal attacks while campaigning in key battleground states. Polls show the race is very close across the country, and both candidates are doing everything they can to win over undecided voters.
In Pennsylvania, Trump made headlines by serving fries at a McDonald’s in a Philadelphia suburb. He used the opportunity to mock Harris, who has said she worked at McDonald’s when she was younger. Trump joked, “I’ve now worked [at McDonald’s] for 15 minutes more than Kamala,” trying to cast doubt on her claim.
While in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Trump focused his speech on the economy and immigration. “The biggest issue in the polls is the economy,” Trump said, “but I think immigration is even bigger. It’s what people want to talk about.”
At the same time, Harris was campaigning in Georgia, where she criticized Trump in a tweet, calling him “exhausted, unstable, and unfit to be President.” During a church visit in Georgia, Harris encouraged people to vote against “chaos, fear, and hate,” which she linked to Trump. At a rally in Atlanta, she went further, describing Trump as “cruel.”
Harris’s team dismissed Trump’s McDonald’s appearance as a “desperate stunt.” Her spokesperson, Ian Sams, told the BBC, “All he knows how to do is lie. He doesn’t understand what it’s like to have a summer job because he was given millions of dollars.”
Harris’s campaign maintains that she worked at a McDonald’s in Alameda, California, in the summer of 1983. While some people support her story, others, including a former coworker, do not remember her being there.
As the candidates ramp up their efforts, both are trying to win votes in the swing states that will likely decide the election. Trump’s focus is on immigration and inflation, topics that are important to his supporters. “Inflation is what affects me most,” said Brennan Zeyak, an 18-year-old first-time voter from Pennsylvania. “Especially gas prices and groceries.”
On Sunday, Harris responded to a recent insult from Trump, who used offensive language to describe her at a rally in Pennsylvania. She said Trump’s words “demean the office” of the presidency and added that he has “not earned the right” to lead the country again.
Both candidates are now in the final stretch of their campaigns. Harris will be visiting Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin on Monday, while Trump heads to North Carolina, where he will visit a hurricane-hit town and hold a rally.
Many undecided voters, like Jordan Ashby from Lancaster, are still waiting to hear more before making a final decision. “I really don’t know yet,” Ashby said. “It’s a tough time right now.”
