Vice President Kamala Harris praised President Joe Biden and his achievements in the White House on Monday, making her first public comments since he endorsed her for president.
Speaking on the White House South Lawn at an event celebrating NCAA athletes who won championships for the 2023-2024 season, Kamala Harris said Biden’s “legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history.”
“In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office,” Kamala Harris remarked.
The vice president commended Biden for his “honesty,” “integrity,” “commitment to faith and his family,” and “his deep love for our country.”
“I witness daily how our President, Joe Biden, fights for the American people, and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation,” she added.
Harris mentioned that Biden wanted to attend the event, which he has hosted in past years, and assured that he is “feeling much better” and “recovering fast” from his recent COVID-19 diagnosis. “He looks forward to getting back on the road,” she said about Biden, who has been isolating at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The focus has now shifted to Harris following Biden’s endorsement on Sunday, moments after he announced he would not seek re-election in the 2024 presidential race. Harris expressed her gratitude for Biden’s endorsement, stating her “intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
Since Biden’s announcement, many prominent Democrats, including some high-profile governors and lawmakers, have endorsed Harris for the presidential nomination. However, key congressional leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to publicly support her.
During her remarks on Monday, Harris did not address her presidential campaign directly, as it was an official White House event. She is expected to discuss her candidacy, plans for the future, and strategy to defeat former President Donald Trump at a later date. Harris also plans to travel to Wilmington, Delaware, to meet with her campaign staff.
