Kamala Harris Wins Democratic Nomination with Enough Votes

Vice President Kamala Harris has gathered enough support from Democratic delegates to be their candidate for president, announced Jaime Harrison, the Chair of the Democratic National Committee, on August 2. This makes Harris the first Black woman and the first Asian-American to be the main candidate for a major party.

The process to choose her started on August 1 and will finish on August 5, using online voting. Kamala Harris shared her gratitude in a video call, saying, “I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States. I will officially accept your nomination next week, after the online voting ends.”

Kamala Harris also talked about a gathering in Chicago later this month to celebrate this big moment. Even though she was the only one running after President Joe Biden decided not to run again, the party still went through the formal process of choosing her.

The Associated Press noted that the convention in October will still have a roll call of states, a traditional part even though the voting was done online. Harris is getting ready to face Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, and has brought on experienced campaigners who worked with Barack Obama.

Harris is also in the final stages of choosing her running mate. A source familiar with the vetting process told CNN that the vice president is expected to meet with the top finalists over the weekend, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

The Democratic Party is excited and rallying around Harris. She is now picking a vice president. She will meet with the top choices on August 4. According to reports, she might choose Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, or she might consider other strong candidates from important states.

Sources from CNN say Harris will meet candidates in person on August 4 and is looking for someone who can help her win. She plans to announce her choice for vice president at a rally in Philadelphia later in August.
