LaMelo Ball Fined $100K by NBA for Offensive Comment, Issues Apology

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for making an offensive and derogatory comment during a post-game interview following the team’s victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on November 16. The league announced the penalty via social media the next day.

The comment, which referenced a term popularized in hip-hop culture and New York City slang for over three decades, was made while Ball was discussing the team’s defensive strategy against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo in their narrow 115-114 win.

The remark drew backlash, prompting Ball to address the controversy after the Hornets’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 17.

“Before we get started, I just want to address the comment yesterday,” Ball said in his opening remarks to reporters. “I really didn’t mean anything [by it] and don’t want to offend anybody. I’ve got love for everybody, and I don’t discriminate.”

Hornets head coach Charles Lee also weighed in, expressing support for Ball while emphasizing the importance of accountability. “I spoke to Melo, and he’s obviously very apologetic,” Lee said.

“From what I’ve seen since I’ve been around him, he loves everyone. He’s a joy to have around the facility, and it’s not typically how he operates. He and I talked about the seriousness of the situation and how he needs to conduct himself going forward.”

Despite the incident, Ball continues to shine on the court in his fifth NBA season. The former Rookie of the Year is averaging 29.6 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game.

The fine underscores the NBA’s stance on maintaining professionalism and inclusivity in player conduct, both on and off the court.
