Lil Wayne’s Fans Upset as Kendrick Lamar Picked for Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in New Orleans

On Sunday, September 9, Kendrick Lamar announced he will be headlining the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in 2025. While some fans were excited, many in the Hip-Hop community were upset, saying that Lil Wayne, who is from New Orleans, should have been picked since the game will be held in his hometown.

Lil Wayne hasn’t said anything about it, but members of his Cash Money Records family have spoken out. Nicki Minaj, who has worked with Wayne for nearly 20 years, posted on social media platform X to share her frustration.

“Denying a young Black man what he earned just because of your ego,” Minaj wrote, likely talking about JAY-Z, who partnered with the NFL in 2019 to help organize the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

She also mentioned how important Wayne has been to Hip-Hop, adding, “Your hate for BIRDMAN, Drake & Nicki is hurting Lil Wayne?! LIL WAYNE!!!! THE GOAT?!!!!!” Minaj also compared the situation to when Eminem made sure 50 Cent performed with him at the Super Bowl, calling it unfair.

Birdman, the founder of Cash Money Records, also showed support for Wayne, Nicki, and Drake, tweeting, “These ngas Pussi @NICKIMINAJ @Drake @LilTunechi YMCMB. I’m going to make these ngas respect us.”

Nicki went on to say how much Wayne has done for her career and for Hip-Hop. “Wayne put Drake and me on his tour without any contracts. He was on all my mixtapes without papers signed. This man has changed the FACE of hip hop,” she wrote, adding that Wayne never did it for the money but for the love of music.

Kendrick Lamar made his announcement with a special trailer directed by his friend Dave Free. In the video, Lamar stands on a football field in front of a large American flag, placing footballs into a passing machine.

“What’s up, everybody? I’m Kendrick Lamar and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl LIX,” he says. “Will you be there? I hope so. It’s your one chance to win a championship. No second chances. Meet me in New Orleans on February 9th, 2025.”

While many are excited to see Kendrick Lamar perform, the debate over whether Lil Wayne should have headlined continues among fans.
