Mariano Rivera, Wife Accused of Covering Up Child Sex Abuse at Home and Church

Share

Legendary baseball player Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara Rivera, are facing explosive allegations of covering up child sexual abuse incidents linked to their church, Refuge of Hope, in New Rochelle, New York.

The accusations, detailed in a lawsuit filed in New York Supreme Court, claim the Riveras failed to act after being informed of multiple abuse incidents involving a minor who attended their church programs. The lawsuit also alleges the couple attempted to silence the victim to shield the church’s reputation.

The lawsuit, brought by plaintiffs identified as “Jane A Doe” and her mother, “Mother A Doe,” accuses Clara Rivera of persuading the mother to send her daughter to a summer internship at Ignite Life Center in Florida in 2018. During the program, the minor was allegedly abused by another participant.

Later that year, the minor reportedly endured further abuse at a barbecue hosted at the Riveras’ Rye, New York, home. In 2021, the lawsuit alleges another incident of abuse involving a youth leader at the church.

According to the lawsuit, the Riveras were aware of the abuse and took deliberate steps to silence the victim and her family. The plaintiffs argue this was an attempt to prevent damage to Refuge of Hope’s public image.

The plaintiffs are requesting a jury trial, alleging negligence and intentional cover-up by the Riveras. They accuse the couple of failing to ensure a safe environment for minors and prioritizing the church’s reputation over the well-being of victims.

The allegations against the baseball icon and his wife have sparked widespread attention, with many expressing shock and disappointment. Advocacy groups are calling for accountability and stronger safeguards to protect minors in religious and community programs.

The Riveras have not yet issued a public statement regarding the allegations. The case remains ongoing, and further developments are expected.

For those affected by similar situations, resources such as the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline are available to provide support and assistance.

This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
