Meghan Markle Says She Had to ‘Learn to Detach’ to Cope With Miscarriage

Meghan Markle has once again spoken publicly about her 2020 miscarriage—this time to offer comfort to a friend navigating her own experience with pregnancy loss.
In the latest episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, released April 15, the Duchess of Sussex engaged in a heartfelt conversation with Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code and CEO of Moms First.
The two discussed grief, healing, and the need to reshape workplaces to better support women’s emotional and physical well-being.
“I’ve spoken about the miscarriage that we experienced,” Markle said during the episode. “I think in some parallel way, when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for… you have to be OK at a certain point to let go of something you planned to love for a long time.”
Saujani, 49, who has also experienced pregnancy loss, thanked Markle for her vulnerability, calling her words “really insightful” and joking that it felt as though the Duchess had been “reading [her] diaries.”
Markle approached the topic with care, asking Saujani’s permission before delving into the deeply personal subject. “I’ll bring this up if you’re comfortable talking about it,” Markle said. “Because I know you’ve spoken publicly about it… and the miscarriages that you’ve experienced.”
This is the second time Markle has addressed the loss. In a deeply personal New York Times op-ed published in November 2020, she first shared the pain of losing her child in July of that year. “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” she wrote.
Her husband, Prince Harry, also spoke on the loss in their 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, linking the miscarriage to the overwhelming stress Markle endured during her legal battle with the Daily Mail.
The couple, who continue to advocate for mental health and maternal wellness, are parents to two children: Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.
