Meta Releases New "Edits" App for Video Editing After CapCut Stops Working

Meta has introduced a new app called “Edits” for editing videos. This new app comes after CapCut was shut down because of a TikTok ban. The U.S. government had concerns that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and its apps could misuse information and spread false information. This led to a rule that forced ByteDance to sell TikTok or shut it down in the U.S.

The TikTok ban affected several of ByteDance’s apps, including CapCut, which were removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on January 19, 2025. The U.S. made a law called Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which caused these apps to be removed.

However, President Donald Trump, who started his term on January 20, 2025, delayed the TikTok ban for 75 days through an executive order. He said this delay would help his administration figure out how to handle the situation in a way that protects the country’s safety while keeping a widely used communication platform running.

While this is being sorted out, Meta has stepped in with the “Edits” app. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced this app as a full set of tools for making videos.

He said that “Edits” is more than just for editing; it includes high-quality camera features, various editing tools, options to share drafts with friends, and detailed feedback on how videos perform on Instagram.

“Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” Mosseri shared on Instagram.

“Edits is more than a video editing app; it’s a full suite of creative tools. There will be a dedicated tab for inspiration, another for keeping track of early ideas, a much higher-quality camera (which I used to record this video), all the editing tools you’d expect, the ability to share drafts with friends and other creators, and—if you decide to share your videos on Instagram—powerful insights into how those videos perform.”

“Edits” is now available for pre-order on the Apple App Store and will be launched officially in February 2025. It will be available on Google Play later.

This new app by Meta shows how the digital world for creating content is changing, underlining the importance for creators and businesses to have options beyond just one platform.
