Michael Jordan’s High School Love Letter Hits Auction, Bidding Surpasses $12K

A handwritten love letter from a young Michael Jordan to his high school girlfriend is now up for auction, with bidding already exceeding $12,000.

The rare piece of memorabilia is listed in the 2025 Lelands Winter Classic Auction and offers a glimpse into the basketball icon’s early life and devotion to the game.

Dated May 20, 1981, the letter was addressed to Laquetta Robinson, Jordan’s former girlfriend. In it, the future NBA legend expresses his love for her while making it clear that basketball would always come first.

“Laquetta, you are my whole life next to basketball. Please don’t get mad about that statement. You are my whole life, but you can’t have basketball,” Jordan wrote.

Even as a teenager, Michael Jordan was focused on his career. Just a year later, he won an NCAA championship with the UNC Tar Heels, paving the way for a historic career that included:

  • Six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls
  • Five MVP awards
  • Two Olympic gold medals
  • NBA Rookie of the Year (1985)
  • Induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (2009)

This isn’t the first time Jordan’s personal memorabilia has drawn big bids at auction. In May 2020, a 20-page love letter to another former girlfriend, Amy Hunter, sold for $25,703.

Other high-ticket Michael Jordan items include:

  • Air Jordan sneakers collection – Sold for $8 million (2023)
  • Game 1 1998 NBA Finals jersey – Sold for $10.1 million (2022), setting an auction record for sports memorabilia

As the auction for Jordan’s high school letter continues, basketball fans and collectors alike are eager to own a rare piece of the legend’s past.
