At the Republican National Convention on July 15, Michigan Representative John James gave a strong speech against the Democrats. He compared his own military service to former President Donald Trump’s experience of surviving an assassination attempt. James is becoming an important figure in Trump’s efforts to attract black voters.
During his speech, John James referred to a controversial statement made by President Joe Biden in 2020 during an interview. Biden had said that black voters who support Trump are betraying their identity. James challenged this by saying, “If you don’t vote for Donald Trump, you ain’t black.”
James also argued that the good economic conditions under Trump were wrongly credited to Barack Obama by the Democrats. Although James supports Trump now, he has criticized him in the past.
In 2020, he told Black community leaders about his disagreements with Trump on several issues, including Trump’s negative comments about other countries and the late Senator John McCain.
In his speech, John James talked about how his parents taught him not to see America as a racist country, despite their own experiences with racism. They encouraged him to believe he could achieve anything and to always put God first.
Senator Tim Scott, another speaker at the convention, also spoke about race. He challenged the idea that America is a racist country, pointing out that if one looks for racism, it’s often found in cities run by Democrats.
According to Deadline Detroit, Tim Scott, another surrogate for Trump, was more forceful in his remarks concerning race, pointing the finger at “liberal elites” and the Democratic Party’s leadership in general, during his remarks.
“I know this is going to offend the liberal elites, every time I say it, it offends them. But let me say it one more time: America is not a racist country. No we’re not. But if you were looking for racism today, you’d find it in cities run by Democrats,” Scott said.
