Muni Long has responded to the criticism she faced over her tribute performance of Mariah Carey’s hit “We Belong Together” at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards. The event celebrated Carey as an industry icon, but a moment caught on camera—showing Carey looking away during Long’s performance—sparked speculation and memes suggesting Carey was unimpressed.
Addressing the controversy on TikTok, Muni Long clarified that Carey herself had requested her to perform the tribute. “You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? You thought that was my choice? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah’s songs like Mariah. Nobody,” Long explained, emphasizing the daunting task of performing a song by such a renowned artist.
Long further shared that despite the online chatter, Carey had personally complimented her on the performance, telling her she did a great job and that she appreciated it. “Once again, if she pushed me down the stairs, if she told me she hated it, I would say thank you. That’s what I would say,” Muni Long added, illustrating her respect and gratitude towards Carey regardless of the public reaction.
Mariah Carey also took to social media to support Muni Long and Tori Kelly, who also participated in the tribute, expressing her gratitude and love for their efforts. “So beyond grateful for these two gorgeous, uber-talented, kind, incredible musicians who made my heart so full of joy with their tribute performances at the @iheartradio awards,” Carey wrote on her Instagram story.
This exchange highlights the complexities of public performances and the scrutiny that artists face, underscoring the importance of respect and appreciation within the music industry.
