Nelly Defends Support for Trump After His First 100 Days in Office

Despite facing criticism for performing at President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration, rapper Nelly is urging Americans to focus on unity rather than division.

In an interview with Fox News Digital marking Trump’s first 100 days in office, the Country Grammar artist described himself as a “glass half full type of guy” and encouraged voters to embrace the new leadership.

“I’m all for everybody staying positive about any and everything,” Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., said. “I’m more empowered by bringing people together and making sure that we all get what we need, when we need it, and why we need it.”

Nelly defended his decision to perform at the Liberty Ball — one of the inaugural celebrations — emphasizing that his respect was for the institution of the presidency, not necessarily for the individual in office.

Speaking in a separate interview with artist Willie D, Nelly explained:

“It doesn’t matter who is in office. The same way that our men and women, our brothers and sisters who protect this country, have to go to war and put their life on the line for whoever’s in office — I can damn sure perform for whoever’s in office.”

Addressing accusations that his participation was financially motivated, Nelly firmly denied the claims.

“I’m not doing this for money. I’m doing this ’cause it’s an honor. I respect the office,” he said, according to Billboard.

Backlash from Peers

However, the backlash was swift and public. During Grammys weekend in February 2025, singer Janelle Monáe made headlines when a video surfaced from an after-party where she criticized Nelly, calling him a “sell-out.” She was supported by fellow artist Anderson .Paak, who joined her in chanting against him.

“Fck you, Nelly, you sold out,”* Monáe rapped, a moment that quickly went viral on social media.

Despite the controversy, Nelly remained unfazed, reiterating that his performance was a matter of principle, not politics.

“The politics, for me, is over. He won! He’s the president. He’s the commander-in-chief of what I would like to say is the best country in the world,” Nelly said.
“Now we look to the president to step up, serve, and lift us all.”
