New York Times Backs Kamala Harris as ‘The Only Choice’ for President

The New York Times editorial board made a rare move on September 30 by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president, calling her “the only patriotic choice,” according to Politico.

This is the first time the Times has backed a presidential candidate since they endorsed Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, highlighting how serious they believe the current situation is.

Instead of focusing only on Harris’s strengths, the Times focused on why former President Donald Trump is unfit for office. “It’s hard to imagine a worse candidate for president of the United States,” the editorial said, stressing that Trump has shown himself to be unworthy of a position that requires putting the country’s good ahead of personal gain.

The board did admit that some people might not agree with all of Harris’s policies, but they emphasized that she is still the best option. “As a dedicated public servant who has shown care, competence, and a strong commitment to the Constitution, Ms. Harris stands out in this race,” the editorial stated.

They also expressed concern over what could happen if Trump were to win again, pointing to his refusal to accept the 2020 election results and his threats to not accept the results of the 2024 election.

The editorial highlighted Trump’s plans to use political power to attack his opponents, warning that he could seriously damage American democracy.

“If voters don’t stand up to him, Trump could do lasting harm to our country,” the board wrote.

Despite the criticism, Trump is still a strong contender. According to CNN polls, Harris is leading with 48% support, while Trump is close behind with 47%.

Both candidates have strong backing from their supporters: 72% of Trump’s supporters say they are voting for him because they like him, not just because they oppose Harris. On the other hand, 60% of Harris’s supporters say they are backing her because of who she is, not just to stop Trump.

While the Times mentioned some positives from Trump’s time in office, they pointed out that his unpredictable behavior and poor decision-making often led to bad outcomes.

In the end, the editorial board made it clear that they believe Kamala Harris is the only real choice for the presidency in 2024.

“Even when Trump had some good ideas, his lack of control and reckless actions caused problems. Kamala Harris is the only choice,” they concluded.

This endorsement from the Times highlights how important this election is, as both candidates prepare for a tight race in November.
