Nigerian Fashion Designer Sets Guinness World Record with World's Largest Sandal

In a remarkable display of creativity and determination, Nigerian fashion designer Liz Sanya set a new Guinness World Record by crafting the world’s largest sandal within a mere 72 hours.

Starting on January 2nd, the Ibadan-born designer embarked on this ambitious project, and by January 4th, she had completed a massive pink clog measuring 4.8 meters in length.

The event took place in Lagos, where Sanya was supported by a host of local celebrities and public figures, including musicians Mayorkun, Pheelz, P.Priime, and Taves, as well as music entrepreneur Bizzle Osikoya and filmmaker Korty. The collaboration highlighted the community’s vibrant support for innovative local talent.

Reflecting on her journey from a young shoe designer to a record-setting fashion icon, Sanya expressed deep emotions about her achievements. “I started designing shoes at 12, and by 14, I was selling them to fund my passion,” she stated.

Her record-breaking effort was a tribute to her roots and her growth, “Ibadan, where I was born, Lagos where I was inspired—it was only right to come back home and prove it.”

Sanya’s achievement surpassed the previous record held by artisans from Municipio De Sahauyo, Mexico, who created a traditional sandal measuring over 7 meters long. Her journey and the resulting giant sandal were documented extensively on Instagram, capturing not only her creative process but also the extensive community support that buoyed her efforts.

Among the many voices of encouragement, one supporter wrote, “Stomp the world,” while another added, “I’m rooting for you.” Sanya herself took to social media to share her thoughts post-achievement: “Believing in me is free, doubting me will cost you,” signaling her confidence and determination.

This monumental achievement not only sets a new world record but also casts a spotlight on the growing influence and innovation within the African fashion industry, which, despite its vibrancy, still faces challenges in garnering global investment.
