Nigerian Teen Khalifa Aminu Creates Life-Changing Glasses for the Blind

Khalifa Aminu, an 18-year-old from Nigeria, has invented a pair of special glasses designed to help visually impaired people walk safely on their own. According to Afrotech, Aminu told DailyNews24 TV that while he has created various devices in the past, such as bomb detectors and automatic water sprays, this new invention was driven by his desire to help people in his community.
“The glasses are meant to assist the blind. We tested them with a blind man, and he was impressed,” Khalifa Aminu shared. “He suggested some improvements, like adding a wireless switch, smaller parts, and black lenses. Although I don’t have all the materials right now, I’m determined to make these changes.”
In a TikTok interview, Khalifa Aminu explained that many people in his hometown struggle with vision problems, which pushed him to invent something that could make their lives easier. “I grew up around visually impaired people, so I understand their challenges,” he said. “That’s why I started working on this technology.”
The glasses are designed to replace the need for a walking stick by using sensors to detect nearby objects or people. When something is detected, the glasses sound an alarm to warn the user.
Khalifa Aminu is seeking support from investors and the government to help improve his invention. Despite the challenges, he remains focused on making his product a reality and encourages other young inventors to keep working on their ideas.
“My advice to young innovators is to use their skills to create something, even without waiting for government support,” Aminu said. “This could eventually lead to starting a business that helps the community. My dream is to get support for a large factory where I can work with a team to create technology for both local use and export.”
In June, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities showed interest in Aminu’s invention. According to AIT, the commission plans to learn more about his work and test how well it functions soon.
