Reagan National Airport Tragedy: Trump and Lawmakers Respond as Investigation Unfolds

On Wednesday night, a devastating collision occurred near Reagan National Airport in the Washington D.C. area when a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, operating as an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas, collided midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter.
The incident took place around 9 p.m. local time in Arlington, Virginia, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed. The regional jet was carrying 60 passengers, though the full extent of injuries and fatalities has yet to be determined.
U.S. officials, including newly-appointed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, responded quickly to the tragedy. Hegseth, who took office just this Monday, acknowledged the incident on X, stating, “DoD actively monitoring. Poised to assist if needed. Prayers for all involved.”
The White House also issued a statement from President Donald Trump late Wednesday night. “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport,” said President Trump.
“May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”
Expressions of sorrow and sympathy emerged from various quarters of the government. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) tweeted her condolences, saying, “Our prayers are with all families impacted by the tragic plane crash that just took place here in DC. Incredibly heartbreaking.”
Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears also expressed her concern, noting on X, “My office is following the breaking and tragic news of a collision at @Reagan_Airport. We pray for the victims, first responders, and all those impacted.”
Adding to the response, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the deployment of U.S. Coast Guard resources for search and rescue operations. “We are actively monitoring the situation & stand ready to support local responders,” Noem posted. “Praying for the victims and first responders.”
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, along with the FAA and American Airlines, are currently gathering more information, which will provide further details about the crash as investigations continue.
