U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) issued a stark warning about President Donald Trump’s actions during his second term, accusing him of undermining the United States’ system of checks and balances. Speaking to MSNBC’s Alex Witt, Crockett characterized the President’s efforts as an attempt to “cleanse” the government.
“He said he’d be a dictator from Day 1,” Crockett remarked, reflecting on Trump’s ongoing presidential conduct that she believes threatens the foundational democratic principles of the country.
She cited “Project 2025” and other initiatives as examples of Trump’s aim to consolidate power akin to a monarchy, which she asserts is antithetical to the democratic republic structure of the U.S.
Crockett further criticized the targeting of Justice Department officials who, in her view, were merely fulfilling their duties, suggesting that these actions are part of a broader attempt by Trump to dismantle the established checks and balances essential for democratic governance.
In a broader critique, Crockett described Trump as a “thug in charge of the United States,” warning that his leadership style focused on division could fundamentally endanger the nation’s future. “If we don’t wake up, we may not have a United States,” she said.
The conversation also touched on Trump’s policy priorities listed on the White House website, which include making America safe and energy dominant again, draining the swamp, and restoring American values. Despite these goals, Crockett condemned the President’s recent controversial decisions regarding immigration, transgender rights, and global policy, among others.
Highlighting the paradox in American political sentiment, Crockett concluded, “The problem is that Americans thought it was OK to take a full-fledged criminal and make him the president of the United States, and then they want to act aghast when he does criminal things.”
This statement encapsulates her profound concern over the ethical and legal implications of Trump’s presidency on the integrity of American democratic institutions.
