Shannon Sharpe Admits Accidental Instagram Live of Private Moment: ‘I’m Embarrassed’

Shannon Sharpe has publicly apologized after accidentally broadcasting an intimate moment to his 3 million Instagram followers. The three-time Super Bowl champion and ESPN host addressed the incident on his show, Nightcap, expressing embarrassment and disappointment over the mistake, which he admitted fell below his personal standards of professionalism.

On Wednesday, Sharpe went live on Instagram, streaming a minute-and-a-half video featuring audio of an unidentified woman moaning. While the video did not show the act, the audio quickly caught attention. Initially, Sharpe claimed his Instagram account had been hacked but later confessed on Nightcap that the mishap was his own doing.

“I threw my phone on the bed and was engaging in something else. I had no idea Instagram Live was on—I’ve never used it before,” Sharpe explained. He added that his assistant intervened to shut off the stream.

Sharpe said he only realized what had happened when his marketing representative called to inform him that he had inadvertently shared the intimate audio with millions of followers.

“My heart sank,” Sharpe recalled. “I called my agent, the agency, and ESPN, and I knew I had to just tell the truth. My phone wasn’t hacked; it was me, being a healthy, active male.”

Sharpe admitted he was “very disappointed” in himself, acknowledging he had let many people down. “Obviously, I’m embarrassed,” he said. “I’m someone who is extremely private, and to have one of my most personal moments broadcast to the world is humiliating.”

Social media quickly reacted to the incident, with users roasting Sharpe over the mishap. He took it in stride, reposting several humorous comments, including one from former ESPN host Michelle Beadle, who jokingly clarified, “It was not me.”

Sharpe, who signed a multi-year deal with ESPN in June, recently expanded his role on First Take, joining Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim on the popular morning debate show. He officially started his new role in August 2023.
