Simone Biles has been honored as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2024, an announcement made public on Thursday, January 2nd, accompanied by a feature cover story.
The 11-time Olympic medalist expressed her excitement and surprise at receiving this prestigious award. In an interview with “Good Morning America,” Simone Biles said, “Honestly, it is such a huge honor.
I know some of the greats that have won it in prior years, so to just keep gymnastics on the map is really exciting. I feel like I’m always shocked winning any sort of award or being honored.”
Sports Illustrated cited Biles’ continuous impact on gymnastics and her vocal advocacy on issues important to her as key reasons for her selection.
The magazine highlighted her resilience and performance, particularly noting her return to the Olympics since her withdrawal from the 2020 Tokyo Games due to “the twisties,” a mental block affecting gymnasts.
Simone Biles triumphant comeback at the 2024 Paris Olympics solidified her status, tying her as the second-most decorated female gymnast in Olympic history.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the annual Sports Illustrated awards in Las Vegas on Tuesday, January 7, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key at the Wynn Las Vegas.
This distinction marks a high point in Simone Biles’ illustrious career, celebrating her remarkable achievements and her influential role in the sport of gymnastics.
