‘Sinners’ Claims No. 1 Spot at Easter Box Office With $45.6M

Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler just proved once again that they’re one of Hollywood’s most powerful creative duos. Their latest film, Sinners, made a massive splash over Easter weekend, pulling in an impressive $45.6 million and knocking A Minecraft Movie off its top spot at the box office.

The supernatural period thriller has now claimed the title of the biggest opening weekend for an original film since Jordan Peele’s Us debuted with $71 million back in 2019.

Variety reports that Sinners outpaced industry expectations, especially considering that Minecraft, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, was expected to dominate for a third straight weekend. But fans clearly had other plans, packing theaters across the country—3,308 of them to be exact—to watch Jordan play not one, but two leading roles as twin brothers.

Set in the Deep South during the 1930s, Sinners follows the troubled siblings as they return to their hometown, hoping to leave the past behind. But instead of peace, they’re met with a haunting presence that forces them to confront dark secrets and even darker forces.

The film marks Jordan and Coogler’s seventh collaboration, starting with their breakout project Fruitvale Station in 2013, and spanning hits like Creed, Black Panther, and its sequel Wakanda Forever. Their creative chemistry continues to shine—and audiences are here for it.

Even though Sinners is technically a horror movie, Coogler says it’s not what people might expect.

“The film is very genre-fluid,” he shared earlier this year. “There are vampires, yes, but that’s just one piece of the puzzle. It’s a mix of horror, drama, love, pain—it’s really a reflection of my passion for storytelling and cinema.”

And it’s that blend of depth and darkness that seems to be striking a chord with moviegoers. From rave reviews to packed screenings, Sinners is shaping up to be more than just a weekend hit—it’s a cultural moment in the making.
