Snoop Dogg recently weighed in on the Super Bowl Halftime Show selection process, particularly addressing the inclusion of artists like Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne.
Speaking at a Drink Champs event during ComplexCon 2024, Snoop highlighted the progress hip-hop has made in gaining representation at such high-profile events, crediting JAY-Z with opening doors for artists.
“Before JAY-Z got control of the Super Bowl, wasn’t no n***as performing. So, let’s go back to the essence of the beginning. He’s creating a wave of artists to have an opportunity to perform. If you’re a good artist or great artist, your time will come,” Snoop stated.
He reflected on his own experience, noting his calm demeanor when called upon by Dr. Dre to perform, expressing gratitude rather than entitlement. “I was never cryin’ about it or mad about it.
When Dr. Dre called me and asked me to [have] his back, I was there for him, but I didn’t feel like I was supposed to be there or in demand to be there,” Snoop explained.
Snoop Dogg also commented on the broader significance of hip-hop’s presence at the Super Bowl. “This is a big event. People lookin’ at everything when picking the [Halftime Show] performer. You should just be honored that Hip-Hop is being able to be seen on that platform for all of us and not hate on the next man, but be happy,” he said.
This discussion revisited a previous statement Snoop Dogg made in September, emphasizing the evolution of the NFL’s relationship with hip-hop over the past 15 years and the rarity of hip-hop artists performing at the event in the past.
The dialogue comes amid Lil Wayne’s public disappointment over not being chosen to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl LIX, set to take place in his hometown of New Orleans on February 9, 2025.
