Just before starting his second term, President-elect Donald Trump has decided to bring TikTok back to the U.S. At a rally just before his inauguration, Trump said, “We have to save it,” and announced plans to keep the popular app running for its 170 million American users.
Soon after Trump’s speech, TikTok told its users, “Thanks to President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.” Although the app is still hard to download from U.S. app stores, some users noticed they could use some of TikTok’s features again.
This is a big change from Trump’s earlier views. Before, he wanted to ban TikTok because he was worried it was sharing data with the Chinese government. Now, he speaks kindly of the app, mentioning how it helped him win over young voters in the 2024 election.
Trump also mentioned wanting a large share in TikTok, suggesting, “I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture.” He assured companies they wouldn’t face any legal trouble for helping keep TikTok available in the U.S.
China’s response was cautious, saying companies should make their own decisions about their operations but also hoping the U.S. would provide a fair business environment. Meanwhile, TikTok’s future is still uncertain as the Supreme Court needs to decide soon about the app, given concerns about national security and privacy.
As Trump prepares to be president again, his decision to save TikTok shows he’s still full of surprises and ready to shake things up in the tech world. This move might help him keep the support of young voters or could reignite old debates.
What’s clear is that Trump’s approach means no popular app, like TikTok, gets left behind.
