TikTok Tells U.S. Employees Their Jobs Are Safe Despite Possible Shutdown

TikTok has told its U.S. employees not to worry about their jobs, even though the company might be shut down in the United States soon. A memo shared by Reuters says TikTok’s leaders care a lot about their employees’ well-being.

They promised that jobs, salaries, and benefits will stay the same, and offices will stay open, no matter what happens by the January 19 deadline.

In December, TikTok’s lawyers asked the Supreme Court to reverse a lower court’s decision that might stop the app from operating in the U.S. unless its Chinese owner, ByteDance, sells it.

This issue comes from a new law called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), signed by President Joe Biden.

This law lets the government ban foreign-owned apps if they think these apps can threaten national security. Some people in Congress believe the Chinese government could use TikTok to get American users’ data and spread false information, even though TikTok is banned in China.

TikTok argues that these security worries are baseless and that banning the app would violate Americans’ freedom of speech rights.

Last week, the Supreme Court seemed likely to agree with the lower court’s decision, which could mean TikTok would have to stop operating, affecting about 170 million users in the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and some lawmakers have suggested giving TikTok more time to fix these issues.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration is looking at ways to keep TikTok running without shutting it down immediately. The law signed by Biden in April 2024 allows him to delay the shutdown for 90 days if there’s enough progress in solving the ownership issue.
