Khaby Lame, the TikTok sensation with the highest number of followers globally, has been named a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador for Senegal, as reported by Deadline.
Khaby Lame, who grew up in Italy, now joins a prestigious group of celebrities such as Donald Glover (Childish Gambino), Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Ricky Martin, and Shakira, who have also served in similar roles.
The announcement was made while Lame was in Senegal, engaging with local children and youth to foster positive societal changes.
During his visit, he drew from his personal journey—overcoming childhood fears of poverty, discovering his passion despite educational struggles, and navigating job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic—to inspire and connect with the young people he met.
“It’s a true honor to be appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and be part of an organization that puts children’s rights front and center every day,” Lame expressed.
His activities in Senegal included visiting a shelter in the capital, Dakar, where he interacted with children who had escaped violence, abuse, and exploitation.
Additionally, Lame, who faced challenges such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, visited schools dedicated to children with disabilities, emphasizing the importance of technology in enhancing education.
Lame’s influence soared during the pandemic with his viral, silent TikTok videos that humorously debunked complicated life hacks. This unique approach not only brought him immense popularity but also helped him surpass well-known U.S. influencers like Charli D’Amelio and MrBeast in follower count.
“We are thrilled to welcome Khaby Lame to the UNICEF family as a Goodwill Ambassador,” said Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director.
“His creativity and unique perspective on the world have inspired hundreds of millions of followers, and will continue to motivate others in raising their voices and telling their stories in their own unique ways.”
Lame’s appointment reflects his significant impact on global youth culture and his potential to drive meaningful change through his vast platform.
