In a heated exchange over social media, attorney Tony Buzbee responded to accusations from rapper JAY-Z, who alleged that Buzbee was attempting to “extort” him. This confrontation follows JAY-Z’s addition to a lawsuit that claims he committed sexual assault in 2000.
On Sunday, via X/Twitter, Buzbee refuted the mogul’s extortion claims and criticized JAY-Z for his efforts to “silence” the alleged victims. The Houston-based lawyer stated, “Regarding the Jay Z case and his efforts to silence my clients: Mr. Carter previously denied being the one who sued me and my firm.
He filed his frivolous case under a pseudonym.” He also noted that the victim sought confidential mediation rather than monetary compensation, stating, “What he fails to say in his recent statement is my firm sent his lawyer a demand letter on behalf of an alleged victim and that victim never demanded a penny from him.”

JAY-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, denied any misconduct and described the lawsuit as a “cheap suit,” accusing Buzbee of a “terrible error in judgment.” He expressed his determination not to settle, declaring his intent to publicly expose what he perceives as Buzbee’s fraudulent tactics.
“What [Buzbee] had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle…No sir, it had the opposite effect! It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion,” JAY-Z stated emphatically.
Buzbee, undeterred by Carter’s threats, remains committed to his client’s cause, stating, “Since I sent the letter on her behalf, Mr. Carter has not only sued me but has tried to bully and harass me and this plaintiff. His conduct has had the opposite impact. She is emboldened. I’m very proud of her resolve.”
The legal battle continues to unfold, with both parties preparing to address their claims in court rather than through the media. This case adds to a complex legal situation that saw JAY-Z and fellow music mogul Diddy named in a lawsuit accusing them of raping a 13-year-old girl at a 2000 MTV VMAs afterparty, an allegation both vehemently deny.
